00 / STUDIO NOTE

One person making software he'd want to use himself.

SwiftSeg is a software studio based in Virginia. The studio designs and engineers software tooling for people doing real work — from the household tracking its cash flow to the firm signing off on a cost-segregation study at 6pm on a Friday.

Small on purpose. One person, for now — and for as long as that's the right shape.

01/Principles

Five things we keep coming back to.

  1. I.

    Compound over linear.

Every system we ship should make the next one faster to build. Patterns earn their keep. One-offs carry their own cost.

  2. II.

    Small, then smaller.

One person, for now. The studio would rather ship fewer surfaces than run a committee. Size is a feature until it isn't.

  3. III.

    No borrowed confidence.

We use the tools we actually understand. Fewer dependencies. Fewer apologies. If it's in the stack, someone here can rebuild it.

  4. IV.

    Software has a shelf life.

Most of what we write will be rewritten. Good architecture makes that cheap; bad architecture makes it impossible.

  5. V.

    The spreadsheet is the baseline.

If a customer's spreadsheet does the job, our product had better clearly beat it. Not on features — on outcome.

02/The studio

One human. Every responsibility.

Runs the business, ships the code, designs the surface. Designed this site, too. Lives in TypeScript, dreams in schemas. Talks to the people, and writes the rules they read.

03/Location

Where the studio is.

The studio operates out of Virginia. We work on Eastern time, Monday through Friday. We travel to meet customers when it earns its weight; otherwise we'd rather ship.

If you're in VA and you'd like to grab coffee, we'd probably say yes.
